Modelling software for people who make parts.
Kerrf is a CAD system we've been building in-house. It isn't built on the same
foundations everyone else uses, and the difference shows up in ordinary work:
operations that fail elsewhere don't fail here, and edits don't break the model.
What it's like to use:
-Rounding an edge just works.** No failed fillets, no error dialogs, no
hunting for the face that broke it.
- Changing a dimension doesn't collapse the model.
-Edits stay edits.
- Scanned and downloaded meshes behave like real solids.** Round them, hollow
them, cut into them — directly, with no repair step first. Most CAD can't do
this at all.
- Interior structures. Hollow a part and fill it with a lattice, dense where
it carries load and light where it doesn't. Weight comes out, strength stays.
- It knows it's going to be printed.** Overhangs and thin walls are flagged
while you model, not after a failed print, and it will orient the part on the
bed for you.
What it does today!
Sketching, extrude and revolve, booleans, patterns, shells, text, edge fillets
and chamfers, parametric dimensions. Lattice infill with graded density. STL, OBJ
and 3MF in and out. Photograph a drawn outline and get a sketch you can edit.
Exact volume, surface area, centre of mass and part weight by material.
Accuracy
Kerrf is checked against exact mathematical answers rather than against pictures.
Where a shape has a known volume, area or dimension, Kerf matches it — typically
to within a rounding error, not a tolerance band. Exported meshes are watertight
and print-ready without repair.
Status
A working prototype, not a finished product, and we'd rather say so.
Solid today: modelling, mesh import and export, lattices, and the print-specific
tooling. Not built yet: STEP export, sketch constraints, assemblies and
engineering drawings. If your work ends in a STEP file to a machine shop, Kerf
isn't your tool yet. If it ends in a printed part, it's close.
The work in front of it is simplicity. The target is that someone who never used cad software can make a real part without being told anything. Built by cad users for CAD and non cad users with simplicity in mind.
